RWAs

Resident Welfare Associations (RWAs) serve as essential links between city administration and residents, RWAs function as miniature city administrations, overseeing crucial aspects like waste management, water infrastructure, and maintaining vital amenities such as street lights, roads, parks, and security in their areas and colonies. These dynamic entities also play a pivotal role in shaping the socio-welfare and cultural landscape of their respective colonies.

Gurgaon boasts of a robust network of over 400 RWAs, each contributing significantly to the city’s vibrancy. RWAs can choose registration as either as a Society or as an Owners Association. Presently, Gurgaon’s RWAs fall under two categories – plotted colonies are registered under the Haryana Registration and Regulation of Societies Act, 2012, while all apartment complexes (cooperative and group housing) are registered under the Haryana Apartment Ownership (HAO) Act 1983.

Several RWAs in Gurgaon have adopted sustainable practices, leading initiatives in waste management, sewage treatment, rainwater harvesting, solar installation, storm water drain recharge structures, greening, and plantation efforts.

The success of RWAs hinges on effective prioritization and implementation of plans and the ability to grow like-minded communities. Strengthening RWAs requires collaborative efforts from residents and city administration alike. Residents contribute by making informed choices in electing RWA representatives and actively supporting initiatives, while city administration establishes consistent mechanisms for engagement and the sharing of best practices.
