Becoming Waste Wise

Gurgaon First and MCG organise “waste wise” training for Gurugram Citizens, Gurugram students get “waste
champion” badges on the occasion of Children’s Day, While waste management is the prime responsibility
of the urban local body, citizens have a key role to play. The more closely citizens understand the
problems and solutions of waste management, the more motivated and empowered they feel to help make a
difference. With this consideration, Gurgaon First organised a half-day “Waste Wise” Training workshop
in collaboration with Municipal Corporation, Gurugram (MCG) at Anya Hotel on Nov 15. The objective of
the workshop is to increase awareness levels of citizens on waste issues and solutions.
The training was attended by school children and teachers, MCG sanitation staff, members of RWAs,
NGOs, corporate and progressive citizens. The workshop started with “Waste Basics” training by
Gurgaon First, followed by expert talks and special remarks by Shri Yashpal Yadav, commissioner,
MCG. The speakers of the waste training were Ms. Shubhra Puri, Founder, Gurgaon First, Mr Surendra
Kumar, Senior Project Coordinator Ecogreen Energy, Mr Radhakrishnan Iyer, President Vowluc, Mr
Keshav Jaini, Garden Estate RWA and Rahul Khera, Founder and CEO, Balancing Bits, Ms Smita Ahuja,
Waste Champion, (E-waste basics) Mr RG Rajkumar, Manager, IL&FS (C&D waste), Priya Mehrish, Waste
Champion, Regency Park II, Ashutosh Dikshit, CEO, Urja and Yashpal Yadav, Commissioner, MCG.
Speaking on the occasion, the MCG Commissioner Mr Yashpal Yadav informed the gathering that MCG plans
to set up plastic collection centres across the city and buy used plastic at Rs 10 per kg. The
plastic collected would be used to build bituminous roads. He said that he is sending a team of
officials to Bangalore in this regard. On solid waste management in Gurugram he said that people
needed to take more responsibility with regard to the waste they generated. He said that MCG is
encouraging more and more societies to adopt composting so that waste can be dealt in a
decentralized way.
